The ground squelched beneath

my soggy socks,

as we lined up

shivering

like jelly on a plate.

Then “GOOO” and we launched

like rockets

across the field.

My feet went thud thud thud,

and my breath went huff huff huff

and my body pushed against the wind,

going whooooosh

There were a thousand hills,

each one steeper

than the last.

My lungs almost exploded

but the wind

cheered me on

whispering (“keep going “)

At the end,

the finish line flapped with enthusiasm.

I finished it.

Not first, not last

but breaking my personal record.
